The Laramie Project
At the Agassiz Theater at Harvard University

The Venue

The Agassiz Theater was built in 1904 as a space for the all-female theater group the Idler Club, affiliated with Radcliffe College.  The theater is currently managed by the Office for the Arts at Harvard, and serves as a try-out space for student directed, student produced, student performed, and student written plays.  Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Kopit, Stockard Channing, John Lithgow, and Peter Sellars are among those who are said to have gotten their start on this stage.

Background:

The Laramie Project is a play written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project.  The play draws on hundreds of interviews, published news reports, and journal entries over the course of two years as original sources for its creation.  The play is approximately 2.5 hours long, with two intermissions.

The Laramie Project premiered in 2000 in Denver, where it subsequently moved on to New York and was even brought to Laramie, Wyoming.  Updates can be found at the Tectonic Theater Project's blog.  HBO later produced a movie, directed by Moises Kaufman, based on the play.

About the Play

The Laramie Project is
a powerful docudrama derived from a compilation of interviews conducted by Moises
Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project.  The story centers on the entire community of Laramie, Wyoming and their reaction to the murder of Matthew Shepard, the victim of a gay hate crime.  Both retrospective and dynamic, heartbreaking and inspiring, The Laramie Project is an experience that you won't want to miss, and one that you won't forget for the rest of your life!
